Lost to You

She had not expected the city to smell the same. Wet pavement, coffee, the faint metallic tang of the river — ten years gone, and her body knew it before she did.

Mira stepped off the train into a crowd that did not know her, and was briefly, perfectly anonymous, and then a man at the far end of the platform turned his head, and the anonymity went out of her like air from a punctured tire.
